... April 2015 climatological summary for northeastern and central
April 2015 started out with weak storm systems that cooled
temperatures and brought rain and snow showers to areas... mainly in
central and eastern Nevada. Hard freezes... including single digit
low temperatures... impacted the region before a warming trend began
on April 4.
On Easter Sunday a storm system initiated wind advisories for gusty
winds and blowing dust. A following storm system brought more gusty
winds... valley rain and mountain snow... up to 19 inches in
areas... that prompted winter storm warnings. On April 9 through
11... ridging provided warmer temperatures... as weak disturbances
brushed northern Nevada near the Oregon and Idaho borders... bringing
more gusty winds.
April 12 and 13... valleys began to bask in the 70s with quiet weather
... Until April 14... when a robust cold front moved through to bring
dramatically colder temperatures... winds with gusts up to 77 mph...
and rain and snow... to northern Nevada. Snow levels fell below 6000
feet with several inches of snow accumulation along the front.
Winter weather advisories were issued.
April 16... high pressure built into Nevada for a warming trend... with
temperatures 5 to 10 degrees above normal. On April 20 the warm
southerly air brought instability and a few stray lightning strikes.
Smoke from wildfires in Siberia affected the Great Basin. Moisture
and instability increased to bring beneficial rain and snow
showers... up to 20 inches in the mountains... again to the region.
Multiple reports from April 23 to the 25th were received of pea size
hail... some up to two inches in depth.
As the storm system departed on April 26... gusty winds again
prompted wind advisories. Widespread subfreezing temperatures also
extended across the region. April 28 brought high pressure to warm
high temperatures... though a lingering weak storm system also
brought thunderstorms to end the month.
The tables below summarize the weather at four of our Airport
climate sites during the period. Temperatures are in degrees
fahrenheit... while precipitation and snowfall is in inches.
