Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch

Statement as of 7:53 AM MDT on July 29, 2014

Expires 11:00 PM EDT on July 29, 2014

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued an

* Arroyo and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
western Curry County in east central New Mexico
eastern De Baca County in east central New Mexico
extreme east central Guadalupe County in east central New Mexico
southern Quay County in east central New Mexico
northwestern Roosevelt County in east central New Mexico
northeastern Chaves County in southeast New Mexico

* until 945 am MDT

* at 749 am MDT National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a
large area of showers and thunderstorms moving slowly east
producing light to moderate rainfall. Radar rainfall estimates
indicate a very saturated ground due to previous rainfall across
the area. Up to an inch of additional rainfall over the next two
hours will continue the risk of rising waters in arroyos and fast
flows across low lying areas. Areas south of Interstate 40 between
Newkirk and Montoya are particularly vulnerable as rainfall
estimates in the area are upwards of 11 inches. The Pecos River
and all its tributaries will continue to see rising water levels.

* Strong flows and high water levels are expected in arroyos... small
streams and over low water crossings.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely.

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through this evening...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* a portion of north and central New Mexico... including the
following areas... Central Highlands... De Baca County... east
slopes Sangre de Cristo Mountains... eastern Lincoln County...
eastern San Miguel County... far northeast Highlands... Guadalupe
County... Harding County... northeast Highlands... northern Sangre
de Cristo Mountains above 9500 feet/Red River... Quay County...
Raton ridge/Johnson Mesa... south central mountains... southern
Sangre de Cristo Mountains above 9500 feet... Union County and
west slopes Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

* Through this evening

* an upper level disturbance will slowly move eastward across
central and northern New Mexico triggering showers and
thunderstorms over much of the area. Weak steering flow aloft
combined with a very moist airmass in place... will result in slow
moving thunderstorms that will be capable of producing very heavy
rain and flash flooding.

* Locations where the ground is already saturated from recent
rainfall will be favored for flash flooding. Other vulnerable
locations will include steep terrain... urban areas and burn
scars. Keep a watchful eye on arroyos and small streams... and
stay out of flooded low water crossings. Monitor the latest
forecasts closely and be prepared to take immediate action if a
warning or advisory is issued.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to
flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash
flood warnings be issued.
