The National Weather Service in Great Falls has issued a Fire
Weather Watch, which is in effect from Wednesday afternoon through
Wednesday evening for low humidity and breezy winds for portions of
central Montana..

* impacts: low humidities and breezy winds will create erratic
fire behavior and an increased risk of new fire starts.

* Affected area:
in north central Montana fire zone... .117.
In southwest Montana fire zone... .118.

* Counties affected:
in central Montana, Cascade, Fergus, Judith Basin
                       Lewis And Clark, Meagher.

Public Information Statement

Statement as of 11:56 AM MDT on August 22, 2017

Expires 8:00 PM EDT on August 22, 2017

... Low rainfall amounts are close to setting new records for
length...

Here is an update on low precipitation amounts over north
central Montana.

Helena has had a 43-day stretch with no more than a trace of rain.
This now ranks as the 3rd longest period. The longest was a 60-day
stretch from Dec 15 1986 through Feb 12 1987.

The current 43-day period with only a trace ranks as the 7th longest
period with 0.01" or less. The longest period was 69-days from Dec
15 1986 through Feb 21 1987.

Periods of light precipitation have occurred over the past month at
Havre. Because of this, short-term lighter precipitation records are
not in danger of being exceeded. However, they have received just
under 4-inches of precipitation in the 263-day period since Dec 2
2016. This is the 13th longest period with less than 4-inches total
accumulation, and the longest since a 284-day period that started on
Jun 8 2011. The record is 323-days from Jul 4 1943 to may 21 1944.

At Great Falls, only 0.15" has fallen since Jun 15. This 68-day
period, which ranks 9th longest, with only this much rain is the
longest such period since a 74-day period that started Jul 8 1969.
The record longest such period is 86-days from Sep 13 1907 to Dec 7
1907.

This is also the longest period with less than one-quarter inch of
rain since a 70-day period that started on Jan 1 2005. The record
longest for less than 0.25" accumulation is a 98-day period from Sep
3 to Dec 9 1953.
