Areal Flood Warning

Statement as of 4:37 PM EDT on April 17, 2014

Expires 9:12 AM EDT on April 18, 2014

The National Weather Service in Caribou Maine has extended the

* Flood Warning for...
extreme southwestern Penobscot County in east central Maine...
this includes the city of Dexter...

* until 500 am EDT Friday

* at 430 PM EDT Thursday law enforcement in Penobscot County report
that the East Branch of the sebasticook river spilled over
its banks and flooded several roads earlier today.

* The Lincoln street bridge is closed in Dexter as a culvert let go
and caused significant damage to the Road earlier today. Due to
the high water levels there is the possibility that additional
flooding could occur with little or no notice or that other
culverts could be pushed up and release water.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However... all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.

spilling into parking lots and encroaching on homes. Areas
specifically affected include places along north Main Street,
College Avenue and Union street.

* Areas in and around Orono along the Penobscot and Stillwater
rivers will be the most affected. Overall, little change in water
levels has been observed in the past several hours prompting the
extension of the warning as river gauges in the area have yet to
crest.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However... all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.
