... Air conditioners worked overtime in June...

For central, south-central and southeast Kansas, June proved to
be a "western sizzler". From the 8th Onward, afternoon
temperatures often reached or exceeded 90 degrees.

The furnace was turned up the highest in central Kansas where
Salina reached or exceeded the dreaded 100-degree mark seven times
from the 15th to the 25th. Salina was torched by 105-degree heat
on the 15th (106) and on the 22nd (105). The 106-degree high on
the 15th tied the record for the date set in 1946 while the
105-degree high on the 22nd was 1 degree short of the record set
in 1937. Salina did tie a record warmest low temperature on the
22nd with a sultry low of 78 degrees. This tied the record set in
1988.

For Wichita, Salina and Chanute, this June was one of the 10
hottest on record. The following are the 10 hottest junes for each
city, along with additional interesting June statistics:

Although rainfall was at a premium, the atmosphere was primed at
the pump for locally heavy rains that caused flooding a handful of
times, and in a few cases flash flooding.

On the 15th, the intense heat interacted with high octane
moisture to generate thunderstorms in south-central Kansas. The
thunderstorms were not only severe, but were also prolific heavy
rain-producers. With weak upper-level flow, this meant that
several areas would get deluged.

That evening, the slow-moving thunderstorms deluged northern
Sedgwick and southern Harvey counties with a staggering 6 to 9
inches that caused flash flooding. Most of the rainfall was
measured in only 2 or 3 hours. Several cars were submerged in
Halstead where stranded motorists needed to be rescued. In
northern Sedgwick County, flash flooding closed roads in Maize,
Park City, and Valley Center where a few vehicles stalled.

The thunderstorms were also prolific hail-producers. Parts of
Harvey and Sedgwick counties were hammered by hail as large as
tennis balls, but 1 to 1.5 inch specimens were far more common.
There were scattered reports of 60 to 70 mph winds. The cloud-to-
ground lightning was vicious; so much, in fact, that it was deemed
too dangerous for the NWS to send the observer outside to measure
the 1pm-7pm rainfall.

Late in the night on the 17th, a severe thunderstorm tore through
Reno, Harvey and Sedgwick counties with 60 to 65 mph winds that
downed a few trees and power lines.

Summer 2016 is off to a blazing start. Here's obviously hoping we
don't repeat the Summer of 2012, when an exceptional flash drought
struck Kansas with a vengeance.
