Wind Chill Watch

... Wind chill watch in effect from Saturday afternoon through
Sunday afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Albany has issued a wind chill
watch... which is in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday
afternoon.

* Locations... Mohawk Valley... greater capital district... Lake
George Saratoga region... Mid Hudson
valley... Taconics... Berkshires and Litchfield Hills.

* Hazard types... dangerous to potentially life threatening wind
chills.

* Wind chill readings... 25 to 40 below zero at times... with
northwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

* Timing... Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon.

* Impacts... wind chills will reach dangerous to potentially life
threatening levels. Frigid temperatures have the potential to
result in frozen pipes... frostbite and hypothermia in a short
amount of time.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A wind chill watch means the there is the potential for a
combination of very cold air and strong winds to create
dangerously low wind chill values. Monitor the latest forecasts
and warnings for updates on this situation.




Special Statement

Statement as of 12:26 PM EST on February 11, 2016


... Potentially life threatening situation with extreme cold this
weekend...

* temperatures this weekend will fall into the single digits and
below zero across all of eastern New York and western New
England. Valley locations will average between 5 and 10 degrees
for high temperatures while higher terrain will remain at or
below zero. Overnight lows will drop below zero.

* Northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph will result in wind chill values
between 20 and 45 degrees below zero... with the coldest values
across the higher terrain. These values will result in frostbite
to occur in 10 minutes or less on exposed skin. Residents are
highly encouraged to take proper precautions with limiting
exposed skin.

* If you have not done so already... be sure to cover exposed pipes
to reduce the threat of frozen pipes or pipe bursts.

* Ensure your furnaces are in working order. Follow manufactures
instructions or utilize a qualified technician to ensure proper
and safe operation of your furnace.

* Never venture outdoors without wearing gloves... a hat and
several layers of clothing.

* Run water at a trickle and keep Cabinet doors open to prevent
pipes from freezing.

* Never use a stove or oven to heat your home or use an open flame
to melt frozen pipes. Many house fires result from these
practices.

* Never use a generator near or inside your home. Carbon monoxide
poisoning is deadly. Check or install Carbon monoxide
detectors.

* Check tire pressure and your car battery. Be sure your car has
a winter safety kit that includes a blanket... warm clothes and
gloves in case your car breaks down or becomes stranded.

* Take extra steps to keep your pets warm and know their limits to
cold.

... Potentially life threatening situation with extreme cold this
weekend...

An Arctic air mass will settle across the region this weekend.
Average high temperatures will be in the single digits and
overnight lows dropping back below zero. In
addition... northwesterly winds with gusts over 20 mph will result
in dangerous wind chill readings ranging from 20 below zero to 45
below zero.

Here are some safety tips for the extreme cold...

1. If you must go outdoors... dress in layers... cover all exposed
skin and keep dry. Be especially cautious of frostbite and
hypothermia.
2. It is recommended to keep indoor temperatures at or above 55
degrees fahrenheit.
3. Check your automobile for proper fuel... antifreeze... windshield
wiper fluid and oil levels.
4. Be especially cautious of fire places and any indoor heating
device for the potential of Carbon monoxide poisoning. Never use a
generator inside your home!
5. Insulate and cover exposed pipes to reduce the chance of pipes
freezing or bursts.
6. Ensure your pets are safe too by limiting outdoor exposure.
7. Children and the elderly are the most susceptible to cold.
Check on elderly neighbors to be sure they are warm and
comfortable.
