Flood Warning

Statement as of 9:25 AM PST on December 10, 2016

The Flood Warning continues for
the Truckee River near Truckee.
* From this afternoon to Sunday afternoon.
* At 9:00 am Saturday the stage was 3.7 feet.
* Flood stage is 4.5 feet.
* Moderate flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... rise above flood stage by Saturday afternoon and
reach a crest near 5.8 feet. The river will fall below flood
stage by late Saturday evening.
* Impact... at 6.0 feet... moderate flooding from Bear Creek in the
Alpine Meadows area to Truckee... about 4200 cfs. Flooding of yards
and basements of low-lying homes along river... some private bridges
impacted.

Areal Flood Watch, Areal Flood Advisory

... Flood Watch remains in effect through this evening...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of east central California and western Nevada,
including the following areas, in east central California,
greater Lake Tahoe area. In western Nevada, greater Lake Tahoe
area and greater Reno-Carson City-Minden area.

* Through this evening

* heavy rain from an an atmospheric river will continue across the
northern Sierra and Lake Tahoe basin through this afternoon.
Snow levels should remain near 8000 feet, but some spotters have
reported accumulating snow around the Tahoe basin as low as
6500 feet.

* The greatest threat for flooding is near small creeks, streams,
and recently burned slopes such as the Little Valley fire. Rock
and mud slides are likely near steep terrain.

* Flooding has been reported in the Mogul area so far today. Rock,
mud slides and ponding of water is impacting travel on
Interstate 80.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Small creeks and streams are the most susceptible to flooding.
Excessive rainfall may also generate rock and mud slides in steep
terrain. Persons living along small creeks and streams should
monitor the latest weather information at weather.Gov/Reno and be
prepared to take action should flooding occur.





811 am PST Sat Dec 10 2016

... The Flood Advisory for rapid rises remains in effect until 1245 PM
PST for alpine... El Dorado... Placer... Sierra... Nevada... southern
Washoe... and Douglas counties and western Carson City...

At 801 am PST, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain from an
atmospheric river continues with snow levels hovering near 8000
feet. Several creeks along the West Shore of Lake Tahoe and on the
west side of Reno are rising rapidly.

At this time the areas of highest concern for minor flooding are
near Blackwood creek, Ward creek and Donner creek in the Lake Tahoe
area. Hunter Creek on the west side of Reno is also rising rapidly
and may exceed it banks this morning.

Rock slides have also occurred on I-80 between Donner Pass and Verdi.
Motorists are urged to use caution and reduce speed while
traveling today.

Heavy rain in the advisory area will continue through at least 10 am.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

A lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe remains in effect until 4 am
PST Sunday.

* Timing: winds will be gusty through early Sunday morning.

* Winds: southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 45 mph.

* Wave heights: 2 to 4 feet.

* Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing
and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Check lake conditions before heading out and be prepared for a
sudden increase in winds and wave heights. Consider postponing
boating activities on the lake until a day with less wind.

... Snow sticking at Tahoe area passes...

Heavy precipitation continues to fall around the Lake Tahoe
basin, with snow levels fluctuating between from 6500 to 8000
feet. Some area passes have become snow covered, including Mount
Rose, Brockway, Spooner, and Kingsbury summits. Additional snow
amounts of 6 to 10 inches are possible for elevations above 8000
feet, with several inches of snow down to 7000 feet.

Donner and echo summits are currently wet with no controls, but
its possible that we could see light snow accumulations up to a
couple inches later this afternoon.

If you have travel plans today or tonight to head over the passes
around Lake Tahoe, make sure to check for Road conditions before
you leave and allow for extra time to reach your destinations.
