Heat Advisory

Statement as of 9:39 AM PDT on September 16, 2014

Expires 10:00 PM EDT on September 16, 2014

... Heat advisory remains in effect until 7 PM PDT this evening...

* high temperatures... from 85 to 93 along the immediate coast...
to 100 degrees or higher in inland Orange County... the inland
Empire... and the inland valleys and foothills of San Diego
County. Heat index values will generally be about 5 degrees
above the actual temperatures due to the high humidity.

* Impacts... abnormally hot temperatures can be stressful to
animals and humans... making it hard for the body to acclimate
and remain hydrated. Without precautions even healthy adults
could experience heat stress and illness.

* Locations... all areas west of the mountains.

* Timing... the hottest weather will continue yet again today.
Temperatures will finally lower several degrees on
Wednesday... though above normal humidity will continue through
Wednesday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible... reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency - call 911.

Beach Hazard Statement

Statement as of 6:42 AM PDT on September 16, 2014

Expires 11:00 PM EDT on September 18, 2014

... Beach hazards statement in effect through Thursday evening...

The National Weather Service in San Diego has issued a beach
hazards statement for strong rip currents and elevated surf... which
is in effect through Thursday evening.

* Waves and surf... 4 to 6 feet along southwest facing beaches. 2
to 4 feet elsewhere.

* Rip currents... widespread dangerous rip and longshore currents.

* Timing... through early Thursday evening.

* Impacts... the elevated surf... strong rip currents... and
longshore currents will produce dangerous swimming
conditions... especially for inexperienced swimmers.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A beach hazards statement for rip currents means that conditions
are present to support a heightened risk of strong rip currents.
Rip currents are typically more frequent and stronger in the
vicinity of jetties... inlets... and piers. Swimmers caught in a rip
current should swim parallel to the coast to escape the rip
current before trying to swim for shore. Swimmers should always
swim near a lifeguard.
