Areal Flood Warning

Statement as of 8:45 AM AKDT on September 02, 2014

The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has issued a

* Flood Warning for...
the upper chena river basin...

* until 845 PM akdt Thursday

* over two inches of rain fell across portions of the chena river
basin since Monday afternoon. An additional quarter inch of rain
is possible in the upper chena basin before the rain tapers off
today.

* The chena river and its tributaries upstream of the Moose Creek
dam will rise rapidly above flood stage through Wednesday. The
chena river at the Granite tors campground is forecast to reach
flood stage this evening and crest Wednesday morning. This crest
will move downriver and is expected to reach the Moose Creek dam
on Thursday.

* Up to a foot of water will likely flow over milepost 36.9 Chena
Hot Springs Road on Wednesday morning and the Road may become
impassable for some vehicles. Water will also inundate a portion
of the Granite tors campground parking lot... the Stiles creek
shooting range... and other areas near the chena river. In
addition... all gravel bars will will be flooded and increased
debris will be in the river.

The chena river downstream of the Moose Creek dam will rise to
near bankfull but flooding will not occur in Fairbanks.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been
reported. All interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.

Never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one
foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the
Road. When encountering flooded roads make the smart choice... turn
around... dont drown.
