... Monthly weather summary for July 2015 for Fairbanks Alaska...

July 2015 was the second month in a row with below normal
temperatures after ten consecutive months of above normal
temperatures at the Fairbanks Airport. July featured periods of
above normal temperatures and several days dense smoke covering
the area. Slow moving thunderstorms in the last week of the month
helped boost rainfall totals well above normal. No daily temperature
records or precipitation records were set in July at the Airport.

Temperatures started off cool in July with the first three days
falling below normal however temperatures soared well into the 80s
by the end of the first week with the temperature climbing to 89
degrees on the 6th which was the warmest temperature recorded in
the month of July and is also the warmest temperature so far
during of the 2015 Summer season. Temperatures dropped again on
the 7th and 8th however as dense smoke from explosive fire growth
in late June and earlier in the week covered the region.
Visibility at many locations over the middle Tanana Valley and
over the central interior dropped to one quarter mile or less at
times in the dense smoke. Air quality dropped to hazardous levels
in the Fairbanks area.

The average high temperature for the month of July was 71.4
degrees which was 1.3 degrees below the normal high temperature
of 72.7 degrees and ranked as the 45th coldest of 109 years of
record. The average low temperature was 53.1 degrees and was 0.8
degrees above the normal low temperature of 52.3 degrees and ranks
as the 20th warmest of 109 years of record. The mean temperature
was 62.2 degrees which was 0.3 degrees below the normal mean
temperature of 62.5 degrees and ranks as the 39th warmest of 109
years of record.

July was wetter than average with measurable rainfall falling on
5 of the last 7 days. 1.07 inches of rain fell on the 27th and
28th and was the heaviest 24 hour rainfall for the month. 2.78
inches of rain fell during the month of July which was 0.62 inches
above the normal July rainfall of 2.16 inches which was the 20th
wettest of 103 years of record.

Looking forward to the month of August possible sunshine continues
to decrease at nearly 7 minutes per day with daylight hours
decreasing from 18 hours and 11 minutes on the 1st to 14 hours and
45 minutes on the 31st. The average daily high temperature
decreases from 70 degrees on the 1st to 62 degrees on the 31st.
The average daily low temperature decreases from 50 degrees on the
1st to 41 degrees on the 31st. An average of 1.88 inches of rain falls
at the Fairbanks Airport during the month of August.

The forecast from the climate prediction center calls for
increased chances for above normal temperatures and equal chances
for below normal... near normal or above normal precipitation for
the month of August.
